Join us for our monthly Men's Breakfast chat and chew! Come on out and discover what's going on with the other guys, or tell us an amazing story about your past or what's going on with you right now. Or, bring up a topic of the day.

Scott says: "Bring your appetites, although there’s a meal that could be split. Also you can get a dish to take home for dinner or for the following day."

Notable among their menu selections for breakfast:

  • Double Breakfast Sandwich: A rustic bun packed with two eggs, melted cheddar-mozzarella, and a double-portion of your choice of protein.
  • Chili Breakfast Burrito: A giant flour tortilla loaded with three eggs, house-made chili, fresh Cabo Loco salsa, melted cheese, smoky bacon, and scallions.
  • Meatloaf Egg & Cheese: A savory twist featuring a thick slice of seared meatloaf and melted cheese on a toasted English muffin.

June 2 (Tuesday): Collaboration Team meeting, 2pm, GSC

Want to have a voice in deciding what GMG will be doing in the future? Come to our meeting and share what's on your mind.

June 4 (Thursday): Ripped from the Headlines "Immigration: What You Can Do", 2pm, GSC

Even if you were born in the USA, were your parents or grandparents immigrants? Did they tell you how difficult or frightening it was for them to reach this country and get settled? Can you imagine the courage it took for them to uproot themselves and start a new life in an unfamiliar country?

arriving immiograntsDid your parents or grandparents arrive on this boat?

As we all know, immigration today is as fraught and difficult as it ever was. We've all recently seen the inhumane actions of ICE.

ICE detention facilityICE detention facility (i.e., a prison)

Rather that passively sitting at home and feeling ashamed or angry about it, are there any actions we can individually take in our local community to improve this situation?

Today, we'll provide an overview of our complex and dysfunctional immigration system. We'll also talk about local organizations that help immigrants, and specific things you can to right now to provide a helping hand to individuals attempting to start a new life in our country.

We'd also like to hear from you. Do you have any family stories of immigration to share?

We're a nation of immigrants. Shall we help each other? You'll be glad you came to this event.

June 8: MOPOP Tour, 2pm

MOPOP

We'll be exploring the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP).

MOPOP is a high-energy, interactive museum dedicated to the creative forces that shape contemporary life, from music and film to video games and literature

Some features:

  • The "Smashed Guitar" Building: Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the building's colorful, undulating metallic exterior was inspired by the energy of rock music—specifically the image of smashed electric guitars.
  • Immersive Fandoms: Rather than traditional displays, MOPOP creates "worlds" for specific genres. You can explore a vampire’s lair in the horror exhibit, step onto a starship in the sci-fi wing, or come face-to-face with a life-sized dragon in the fantasy gallery.
  • Hands-On Creativity: In the Sound Lab, you can record your own music in private booths, while the Indie Game Revolution area lets you play demos of cutting-edge video games.
  • Iconic Artifacts: It houses one of the world's largest collections of pop culture memorabilia, including:
  • Jimi Hendrix's guitars and handwritten lyrics.
  • Nirvana stage costumes and original recordings.
  • Movie props like Luke Skywalker’s hand from Star Wars, the axe from The Shining, and the T-800 Terminator.

We have 15 free tickets (normal cost is $30). Contact Bruce to reserve your free ticket. GSC van is available for transportation.

WHERE: 325 5th Ave N

Taking the bus? Here's what our bus guru suggests:

  1. As opposed to taking the E (Aurora), the 5 (GSC/Phinney Ridge) is a pleasant & efficient alternative for many more Group members.
  2. For the east (MOPOP) side of Seattle Center, the closest stop of both these southbound busses is at Thomas Street (one after Galer Street): it is not downtown and is about three blocks east of MOPOP.
  3. At the noon hour Jeff will likely be at GSC with Ken and Tony, and can accompany anybody else unfamiliar with the trip on the #5.

June 15: Bocce ball, 2pm, WPLBC

June 22: Help Build Tiny Homes at Hope Factory, 9am-2:30pm

Volunteers from the Greenwood men's group will go to the Hope Factory to help build tiny homes for the unhoused. The more volunteers we have, the more fun it will be! No skills required.

We recently toured the Hope Factory and found it to be very interesting. So this time, rather than just looking at how tiny houses are made, we will actually be creating them. You won't want to miss this unique experience!

If interested, contact Fernando or Bruce as soon as you can. We need to know how many will be participating because we are limited to 12 people.

More info and transportation details coming soon.

(June 24 (Wednesday): Orienteering in Woodland Park, 5pm)

Did you enjoy our past Orienteering events at Magnuson Park? Interested in doing some "live" orienteering? The Cascade Orienteering Club is running an event in nearby Woodland Park.

woodland park orienteering

The beginner's course is only 1 km. If you're ambitious, they have 3 longer course that are more challenging.

Orienteering is a sport, a race to see who can complete the course in the shortest time. But, really, who cares at our age? Just come on out and discover how adept you are at using a map to find your waypoints along the course.

Note: There will be some real competitors racing about, as if a bear was chasing them. Ignore them. No need for you to rush about and get disoriented.

Although the event is designed for individuals, we could certainly go as a group -- if we can get organized. Of course, you may compete as an individual.

This is not an official GMG event but it would be no surprise if a few GMGers show up. Cost is $25 on the day of the event. Get more details here.

June 29: "Best Cybersecurity Practices", 2pm, GSC

hacker eyeball

Don't let sloppy cybersecurity practices ruin your day. Or worse.

You will want to attend this follow-up to our earlier Personal Security & Privacy discussion. Bryant presented a broad overview but there wasn't enough time to dig into the nitty-gritty.  So today's discussion will dive deeper into some specific issues that you may encounter.

You've probably heard that Anthropic's Claude Mythos AI has uncovered unknown THOUSANDS of previously undetected software vulnerabilities. Plus, we now have AI producing software that is potentially insecure. This could be a hacker's paradise!

You, the user of devices and software, are at risk and at a disadvantage. How do you know your software and online activities are safe?

In the words of the Director of Wicked Problems Lab at Vanderbilt University Institute of National Security, "Many people may think these problems belong only to the world of cybersecurity experts or tech people, but that's no longer true. New AI tools are going to increase how much insecure software you use in your day-to-day life, while giving attackers a new, powerful weapon to exploit vulnerabilities...If there was ever a time to finally take your cybersecurity practices seriously, it's now."

One of the topics likely to be reviewed is the use of passkeys vs. passwords.
