Purpose of a Seattle Senior Men's Group
Any group of mature men need a purpose.
We should consider an overarching mission to provide a supportive and inclusive environment in which men from diverse backgrounds can foster camaraderie, develop friendship, share wisdom, enrich one another's lives and contribute to the community.
Here is an example of one group's purpose or mission statement:
- Create an organization and gathering spaces and activities that
are accessible on a regular basis for older men in Seattle and its neighborhoods such as Greenwood.
- Create a welcoming environment for a wide variety of men with
different backgrounds and experiences, especially by stressing acceptance of
difference, without making people feel "othered". We welcome all men regardless of birth,
disability or health status.
- Provide connections to a variety of recurring activities that appeal to
the majority of members and can attract the others. Create a schedule aimed at
providing events that appeal or cater to the different desires and needs of the
members.
- Promote relationship-building among group members and individuals.
- Encourage trust and communication within the groups.
- Support the physical and mental well-being of each group
member.
- Facilitate the personal growth of each member by sharing of
our thoughts and concerns, life experiences and wisdom, while learning from
each other.
- Create an environment where men feel safe from attack or
criticism, and where men can comfortably share personal or confidential
information.
- Develop social circles of shared interests.
- Help any member in case of need.
- Encourage each member to actively participate and contribute
to the group in their own way, to listen well, and to offer ideas or suggestions.
